Fondé par Jake Burton en 1982, l'U.S Open est sans nul doute l'une des compétitions internationales les plus anciennes et les plus disputées encore aujourd'hui. Organisé à Stratton Mountain, dans le Vermont, ce contest ne répond à aucune fédération, ne décerne aucun titre, mais pourtant, au même titre que les championnats du Monde, les X-Games ou les J.O, gagner l'U.S Open est vécu comme une consécration par n'importe quel pro-rider.
